Sculpture

As an Artist it is my hope that a viewer of my work will be touched by the esthetics of ancient art, through an eclectic assembly of ancient visual elements, it is my expectation that my work will awaken in the viewer a connection with his ancestral past. As a child and young man in the early 1960’s growing up in the Mimbres Valley, in Southwestern New Mexico, I became familiar with the art of the Mimbres people, many of their incredible black on white pottery was found on my grandfathers ranch. These wonderful works of art were my original inspiration, which led towards studying the art of many different prehistoric peoples, and ultimately to my current form of expression.

My work is created by using traditional and contemporary techniques and materials, as a result each piece is a work of art that is very contemporary in nature, yet retaining many of the ancient visual elements found in pre-historic art. My sculptures are of shaman figures and earth maidens, animal forms, three-dimensional figures depicting prehistoric medicine men and mythological maidens, and animals represented in ancient art. Each piece is one of a kind original work of art.

Pottery

Pottery is created using handbuild techniques and are fired using a combination of modern and primitive firing techniques. The forms and designs are very primitive in nature.  Often my designs are based on those of the Mimbres culuture which existed 1500 years ago.

Santos and Retablos

My religious work is derived from my early exposure as a child to saints in the local church and studying early New Mexico Santero Art. When I became an adult and traveled to northern New Mexico and visited the old churches I was deeply move by the beauty and simplicity of old sacred art and the incredible spiritual connection that it had on me. As a result I began investigating the techniques used in producing this beautiful art and started painting retablos. My sacred art is produced using traditional techniques and materials.
